About - De Niro, who passed away in 2017, was a legend in his own lifetime. The son of Donnerhall excelled in both sport and breeding; competing up to grand prix and producing numerous champions at top level. Renowned for his phenomenal ability for the collected work and his extravagant hindleg, De Niro was an unparelled sire of grand prix horses. If you are wanting to improve on hind leg action, and produce top level dressage horses look no further. De Niro was also famous for his temperament and rideability.

Performance - De Niro was vice champion of the stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf with a score of 141.93 points and champion of rideability with a score of 145.41 points. By the age of seven, he was winning at national grand prix, and he won the German Championships of Professional Riders in 2001. In 2002, he won international grands prix at Saumur and Berlin, and in 2003, he was the winner of the German Dressage Derby in Hamburg.

Sire - De Niro's sire Donnerhall appears in the pedigree of almost every top-level dressage horse competing today. Donnerhall won numerous international grands prix, including team golds at the 1994 & 1998 World Equestrian Games and the 1997 European Championships, and two individual bronze medals (1994 & 1997). Donnerhall ranked inside the top 10 of the WBFSH Sire Rankings for seven consecutive seasons (2008-2014). Donnerhall's offspring include Damon Hill, Donnerschlag, Donnersong, Don Schufro, Don Principe and Donnperignon.

Damline - De Niro's dam also produced a licensed full-brother of De Niro, Dimension, who sired the grand prix horses Dall-Mayer and Deveraux B. Akzent II was particularly noted as a sire of broodmares and as well as De Niro and Dimension, he is the dam sire of Gralshüter, Carismo, Welton, Trend, Pik Labonics, World Man G, Grannus As and Gracieux. Alicante's dam sire is the Thoroughbred, Wiesenbaum, with the great Ferdinand on the dam line – from this dam line came Franke Sloothaak’s international showjumper, Landdame.

Progeny - Among his most successful offspring currently, you find the World Championship team bronze winner, German Vice Champion and Medien Cup winner, Dablino, ridden by Anabel Balkenhol, the three-time European Young Rider gold-medallist, D'Agostino, German Champion and World Champion of young dressage horses, Deveraux OLD, and the talented young Grand Prix star, Delgado, European individual bronze medallist with Beatriz Ferrer-Salat.

His most successful son is Desperados FRH, ridden by Kristina Bröring-Sprehe. In 2013, Desperados and D'Agostino led the German dressage team to the gold medal at the European Championships in Herning. Desperados also won team gold at the 2016 Olympics, team silver at London 2012, and team gold and double individual silver at the 2015 European Championships. In eight championship appearances, Desperados has finished in the top five on seven of those occasions. He has scored over 88% at grand prix and has never scored below 71% with Kristina.

De Niro also sired the Oldenburg licensing champion Don Deluxe, later sold to Andreas Helgstrand for €910,000, plus the Reserve Champion and three-time State Champion, Depardieu, now ridden by Emma Hindle, the winner of the Hanoverian licensing and stallion performance test, Dancier, who sold to the State Stud in Celle for €220,000.

De Niro is also found again and again as the damsire in the pedigrees of outstanding performance horses. For example, the champion stallion, Hotline, who broke the Stallion Market price record, selling for €800,000, and the Oldenburg Champion Mare, Fifty-Fifty. De Niro's daughter Edina became the 2010 Oldenburg Champion Mare and his daughter Die Weingard was the 2000 Reserve Champion Mare in Rastede.

De Niro is also the damsire of Bretton Woods and his brother Chagall (the holder of the highest breeding value for dressage in the KWPN).
