About - Grey Flanell was one of the most striking stallions of the Oldenburg stallion licensing in 2012. He has almost limitless movement - with great force from the hindquarters and outstanding reach, coupled with correct conformation, and a very strong top line. His first forays under saddle showed his natural cadence.
Performance - As a young stallion, Grey Flanell won novice classes for young horses, was the best stallion at the Dutch Pavo Trophy, and qualified for the Bundeschampionat. He was awarded the dressage Hauptprämie from the Oldenburg Verband in recognition of his outstanding first foal crop.
Sire - His father Gribaldi was an elite stallion, Trakehner Stallion of the Year in 2008 and was an internationally successful Grand Prix horse under Edward Gal. Gribaldi has made a very distinctive mark on sport horse breeding. The list of his high-profile offspring is long: Elite Stallion Hofrat, Distelzar, Painted Black and Sisther de Jeu - just to name a few - but World and European Champion and record-breaker Totilas is the most noted.
Damline - Damsire Clavecimbel was also a successful Grand Prix stallion, and super-sire Ferro, grandsire of Valegro, completes this performance pedigree. He was individual fifth and part of the team bronze at the Sydney Olympics, sixth at the World Cup qualifier in Rome, and second at the World Cup finals. Ferro has produced numerous top horses, including his licensed sons Metall and Negro and the dressage World Championship reserve Rousseau. The great-grand-dam Zanoeska was successful in S-level dressage and S-level jumping, and the granddam Janoeska was an S-level jumping mare.
Progeny - Grey Flanell had three licensed sons from his first crop, including Paul Schockemöhle's Great Schufro. At the Elite Foal Auction in Vechta, the second and third highest prices (€65,000 and €60,000) were for Grey Flanell offspring. At the 2017 Oldenburg licensing, a Grey Flanell son from a Licotus x Rotspon mare was a much-admired stallion who was awarded a premium. Grey Flanell will not produce chestnut foals. He is a sensitive stallion and his offspring inherit their father's quick reflexes - he is well suited to mares needing improved quickness and reactivity but would not be suited to a very hot mare.
